General Information

The throttle valve cable controls the transaxle line pressure and consequently the shift feel and timing, as well as the part throttle and detent downshifts. The TV cable is attached to the link at the throttle lever and bracket at the transaxle and to the throttle lever on the carb or throttle body on the engine. Whenever the TV cable has been disconnected from the carb/throttle body, it must be adjusted after installation

Adjustment

  • The freeness of the TV cable can be check by pulling on the upper end of the cable. the cable should travel a short distance with light resistance due to the small coiled return spring. Pull the cable farther out to move the lever into contact with the plunger, thus compressing the heavier TV spring. When released, the cable should return to the closed position, verifying that the cable, TV lever and bracket and the TV plunger are moving freely.
  • The engine must be off during adjustment.
  • Remove the air cleaner, labeling all hoses as they are removed to simplify installation. (carb/TBI models only)
  • Depress and hold-down the metal readjusting tab at the engine end of the TV cable. (It may be quite stiff, use a flat screwdriver if necessary)
  • While holding the tab down, move the slider until it stops against the fitting.
  • Release the readjustment tab.
  • Rotate the throttle lever to maximum thravel stop position. The cable will ratchet through the slider and automatically readjust itself.
  • Road test the vehicle. If delayed or only full-throttle shifts still occur, have the vehicle checked by a dealer or transmission service shop.

Replacement

Removal

  1. Disconnect the TV cable from the throttle lever at the carb or throttle body.
  2. Disconnect the TV cable housing from the bracket by compressing the tangs and pushing the housing back through the bracket.
  3. Disconnect any clips or straps retaining the cable to the transaxle.
  4. Remove the bolt retaining the cable to the transaxle.
  5. Pull up on the cover until the end of the cable can be seen, then disconnect it from the transaxle TV link.
  6. Remove the cable from the vehicle.

Installation

  1. Connect the cable to the transaxle TV link and install the bolt.
  2. Tighten the bolt securely over the cable.
  3. Route the cable to the top of the engine.
  4. Push the housing through the bracket until it clicks into place.
  5. Connect the TV cable to the throttle lever.
  6. Adjust the cable (see above)
